Rebeka Warrior

There are creatives who can open a door to their world, a whole new, multifaceted and exploratory world in which the project or the sensitivity of others finds immediately the right place to expand. This is the case of Rebeka Warrior and her universe crossed by impulses, placed with delicacy and know-how at the service of each film, the story it tells and the person who makes it. I discovered, perhaps naively, that the composition depended entirely on meeting the director. I absolutely must adhere to the film. It’s a recognition in collaboration that is essential for a possible composition. I know I bring a universe, but the film itself will have its own universe, that’s the whole question. It is to create it that we build together. For the moment, I don’t see any really common marker in the films that I composed the music for, except each time a successful encounter and the formalization of my musical spontaneity.”

Recent feature films she has worked on include: Paula by Angela Ottobah (2023), Foreign Language by Claire Burger (2024) and a musical in preparation by Alexis Langlois, Queens of Drama (2024), for which she has frankly enjoyed composing and writing the lyrics of songs. Side series, Split (2023) by Iris Brey.

Rebeka Warrior does not come from a formal musical education. Graduated from the Beaux-Arts, “where I still studied sounds and experimental music”, she says, for more than twenty years she has been pursuing a vibrant career as a singer, composer and DJ through various collaborations including groups Sexy Sushi, Mansfield.TYA and Kompromat in duet with the artist and composer Vitalic. Varied styles, juxtaposed musical currents, a constant poetry in this hard-working reader, adept of zen, very sensitive to writing, interested in the baroque, expert of electro-punk, EBM and cold wave. Rebeka Warrior finds and sows poetry everywhere, right down to psychological thrillers like Paula. “I find it interesting to let the composer go to the end of an idea, that there is a touch of extreme, of radicality, to be able to say something without casting a shadow on the narrative. This is also why the exchange with the director is fundamental, whether he is sure of what he wants or is still looking for it. Once I get the expectation, I can get started very quickly.

Because Rebeka has a sense for cinema. She is a deeply cinematic composer; a sharp-edged, clear-cut film-maker with her own tastes, without arrogance or willingness to show. It was the generics that first led her to composing music with images: for this, we came to look for her. Then, in turn, she wanted to go further, deeper, to accompany the image by sound in her own way. An approach to music that makes her feel at ease, fully aware of what she can do and what she can bring. I’m going to go in the very sense of the word audiovisual,” she explains. “Audio first, to better serve the visual. This concept infuses all my way of working: I meet the director and read the script, then I immediately begin to lay out the contours of a sound universe that will infuse the whole story and its realization, without waiting for the first images. Not at all. The music kind of infuses the shot, it kind of tells a general direction.
