Yasmine Meddour
Yasmine Meddour was born in Russia and spent her early childhood in Algeria before moving to Paris at the age of eight. It was there that she began singing in a local choir and writing her own music, composing on a second-hand piano given to her by her mother.
Her musical inspiration spans a wide range of genres and influences — from classical composers such as Ravel, Mahler, and Shostakovich, to film composers including Alexandre Desplat, Clint Mansell, and Jóhann Jóhannsson, as well as alternative rock icons like Radiohead and Björk, and elements of electronic music.
While studying music in high school, Yasmine was invited by film director Xavier Gens to compose and perform an original song for his feature film The Divide. This experience ignited her passion for the interplay between music and moving images, leading her to pursue a career as a film composer.
In 2020, she composed a song for the film Papicha directed by Mounia Meddour, which was selected for the Cannes Film Festival and went on to win two César Awards. That same year, she took part as a composer in the International Music and Film Festival of Aubagne Masterclass.
In 2022, Yasmine co-composed the original score for Houria – Mounia Meddour’s second feature film – alongside Maxence Dussère. Their collaboration continues with Mounia Meddour’s upcoming feature film, Malika.
She is currently collaborating with sound designer Paolo Castrini on her debut EP, a project that explores sounds and memories from her childhood in Kabylia, Algeria.
